Considering that 29 chapters were contributed by 40 authors and coauthors, the unity and continuity achieved by the editors is very satisfactory. Although, inevitably, the intentions of the editors have been implemented with varying degrees of success, most chapters do indeed deal, as intended, with involved and controversial issues both comprehensively and critically. The grey area at the constantly moving borderline between "established facts" (that is, those widely agreed on at the time of writing) and working hypotheses has been worked out well throughout.
