Long and thoughtful clinical experience, detailed knowledge of the pertinent medical literature, and command of language are the ingredients necessary to produce a good medical textbook. Indeed, the felicitous combination of these factors has permitted Professor Northfield this achievement, all the more remarkable in an era of multiple authorship.
