The indications for corticosteroid therapy have dramatically expanded during the past 25 years. These drugs are valuable therapeutic tools. Their proper use is a never-ending challenge that demands unending vigilance and good clinical judgment. Prompt use may be crucial in a patient with temporal arteritis. On the other hand, prolonged administration may cause significant adverse effects involving several organ systems. The reduction of dosage or the discontinuation of steroids may be followed by reactivation of a disease that had apparently been controlled.
