CHARLES G. ROLAND, M.D.
A man who accomplished as much as Osler did, and who influenced as many colleagues and students, almost inevitably acquires a patina of perfection after his death. Yet Osler was not flawless. He could, for example, be vigorously and publicly outspoken, writing or speaking in a manner that belies any image of unremitting kindliness. Several instances of such behavior are itemized and discussed, not to belittle a genuinely great man, but to emphasize his humanness and his reality.
