To the editor: Apropos the conference "Thyroid Physiology in Health and Disease in the July 1974 issue (Annals of Internal Medicine), I should like to have some clarification.
To estimate the normal extent of T3 conversion from T4 at the periphery, the conversion of exogenous T4 was studied in hypothyroid patients. Thyrotrophin (TSH) is known to increase the release of thyroid hormones from thyroid gland. Also, the level of T3 in certain hypothyroid cases has been found to be relatively high, and this has been explained on the basis of hyperactivity of the remaining small amount of thyroid tissue.
