HERBERT L. ECKERT, M.D.
To the editor: You and Drs. Weitzman and Berger are to be commended for the relevance you bring to analytic epidemiology in the paper, "Clinical Trial Design in Studies of Corticosteroids for Bacterial Infections" (Ann Intern Med 81:36-42, 1974). It helps to fill a void in a paradoxical aspect of the medical school curricula, which expose the preclinical students to the theories of epidemiology but examine the students (National Boards or FLEX) after their clinical years. As the article implies, there may be little application of epidemiologic fundamentals in the clinical or postgraduate years of medical training.
