Lennard bickel has written a magnificent biography of the late Howard Walter Florey, the Australian who came to England as a Rhodes Scholar to become one of the great medical scientists of our time. Florey more than any other single person is responsible for giving penicillin therapy to the world and for erasing the dread of bacterial diseases. Millions owe their lives to Florey and his Oxford team of superb researchers. Despite this acknowledgment, the name Alexander Fleming comes to mind more frequently than Florey's for penicillin's contribution to medicine.
