This series of papers presented at the 1974 conference "The Person with Alcoholism" includes one of the late Dr. Lawrence S. Kubie's last papers, in which he points out that alcoholism, like all neurosis, consists of a long, reverberating chain of progressive disturbances. His "obvious" emphasis that an alcoholic must first give up his alcohol before he can benefit from psychiatric treatment should go far to popularize this idea, which workers in the field have long felt is an essential beginning for any effective treatment program.
