The two editors and five contributors are microbiologists from the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. They have attempted to cover the field of microbiology and infectious disease in a single textbook presentation.
The first 11 chapters describe many of the characteristics of the cell and host relevant to the study of human infectious diseases. Included are microbial genetics, characteristics of microorganisms, pathogenicity factors of the organism, and defense mechanisms of the host. In addition, the mechanisms of chemotherapy of antimicrobials are also discussed. The topics of immunohematology, transplantation immunology, allergic diseases, and autoimmunity are introduced as well.
