The state of our knowledge of adjuvant activity was aptly summarized by R. G. White in 1967 when he noted that "the list of them reads like a medieval alchemist's shopping list." Quoting this apt aphorism, Jollès and Paraf begin their monographic attempt to correlate alchemy and cellular immunology, empiric observation and molecular structure of adjuvant components. The style of the book is terse, almost telegraphic in sections, as the authors ambitiously attempt to review the very broad field of their title. When such treatment is applied at length to examination of a delimited topic, the resulting summary of material
