Research into the renin-angiotensin system is ever expanding, and this book includes many of the current concepts. A series of chapters by different authors cover the physiology and pharmacology of angiotensin, with attention to its many peripheral, central, autonomic, and intrarenal actions. Only two chapters discuss the clinical aspects of the renin-angiotensin system, but it should be remembered that measurements of these substances have only really been available since the early 1960s, and there still is no international standard for renin. The true value of estimation of renin or angiotensin in ordinary cases of hypertension therefore remains unknown.
