Despite a similarity in titles, these books report two 1972 conferences with quite different philosophies. The first covers a postgraduate course offered by the University of Southern California. There are four chapters devoted to the pathophysiology of obesity, three to some clinical aspects, and four to newer approaches to the treatment, including diet, exercise, drugs, behavior modification and jejunoileal bypass surgery. Articles are appropriately illustrated, 264 references are listed, and there is a handy index. The general tone is thoughtful, inquisitive, balanced and progressive; it is a tidy wrap-up of the current state of the art.
