To the editor: The differing viewpoints on alcoholism offered by Drs. Burnum (Ann Intern Med 81:387-393, 1974) and Seixas (Ann Intern Med 81:396-398, 1974) prompted a review of problem-list cards (index cards containing a patient's problem list on one side; medications, pertinent laboratory data, and other information on the other) from the first 53 consecutive admissions to my service on the medical wards of the Cincinnati Veterans Administration Hospital in July and August.
All patients were men. Alcohol abuse or alcoholism was listed as a problem if the patient drank more than 4 cans of beer, 1 quart of wine,
