To the editor: In his letter concerning the value of reading medical abstracts and editorials (Ann Intern Med 81: 417, 1974), Dr. Oster claims that an investment of 5 hours each month would enable an average reader to attain "a superficial acquaintance" with the current medical literature. Actually the time required would be much longer.
Dr. Oster did not allow time for reading either classified ads or letters to the editor, both of which are obviously required for a true "superficial acquaintance." In addition, he did not compute the time required for turning all those pages. This alone can add
