The detailed three-dimensional topography of the erythrocyte is presented in this atlas with a selected group of micrographs obtained by scanning electron microscopy. Cellular events associated with the loss of the nucleus in the developing erythroblast and the destruction of the defunct erythrocyte are illustrated. In addition to the morphology of the normal erythrocyte, membrane modifications induced ex vivo by chemical agents, and surface alterations found in various of the hematologic disease states are presented.
Also included is a nomenclature designed to provide a practical classification of the different shapes of the erythrocyte as viewed with the scanning electron microscope.
