The word "manual" in the title of this book is misleading. This is not a simple handbook to be used by the practicing physician as a ready reference to balanced information about hypertension. Rather, it is a compilation of three previously published symposia on hypertension edited by Dr. Laragh (American Journal of Medicine, May 1972 and September 1973; American Journal of Cardiology, September 1973). Each chapter provides an in-depth review of some aspect of hypertension and is written by a known authority in that area. The multiple authorship leads to much repetition and makes the book unreasonably long.
