Socially oriented books on medical care seem to be hot copy right now. Although much more concise and better written than most, this one will be tedious reading for most physicians. This small monograph reports the results of an epidemiologic survey of needs for social and medical services in a sample of 2500 persons (ages 18 to 65) representative of the population in suburban and rural regions around Stockholm, Sweden. It offers a rather comprehensive review of pertinent literature and a very good discussion of needs, demands, and uses of services. The main conclusions of the study are the following:
