This is the first monograph on syringomyelia in English. It is attractively printed, well illustrated, and conscientiously referenced. Most important, it is comprehensive and well written.
The book is divided into two sections. That on communicating syringomyelia includes chapters on pathogenesis, clinical features, radiology, and surgical treatment. Under noncommunicating syringomyelia, the chapters deal with etiologic factors such as trauma, tumor, and arachnoiditis. Most chapters have concluding summaries.
The general theme of the book is exciting: improved understanding of the pathogenesis of syringomyelia has led in recent years to improved surgical treatment so that there is now hope for many victims
