The first generation of publications concerned with Chinese medicine were largely in the form of testimonials. They consisted of journalistic articles that reflected the highly personal impressions of a small group of physicians privileged to be admitted to the People's Republic. Shallow and uncritical, many of these articles merely revealed a short but uneventful journey and a pervading sense of wonder at the drastic changes in health care structure and practice that had occurred—largely unknown to the West —since 1949.
In contrast, the present book exemplifies a new second generation of writing on China's medicine. It is interpretative rather than
