The success of the clonal selection theory of antibody production has encouraged Sir Macfarlane Burnet to develop a similar approach in his new book on the problem of aging. The argument developed is that aging is due to somatic mutation and that the rate of this mutation is intrinsic to the species, the rate of aging being too important in the life of the species to be left entirely to chance.
The book is an example of clear, concise expository writing. It presumes some knowledge of biochemistry and immunology but could be followed readily by any reader of Scientific American.
