Frederick Hofmann, a professor of pharmacology, and his wife Adele, an associate professor of clinical pediatrics, have written a handbook on drug and alcohol abuse that gives an excellent overview of this whole field. In the introduction they describe the nature of the drug experience, assigning each drug to a specific group on the basis of various criteria, such as the principal anatomic side of action, the type of effect produced, the therapeutic indication of use, and the mechanism of action.
