The well deserved reputation of this encyclopaedic reference work on digestive tract disease remains secure, judging from the excellence and thoroughness of modern revisions used in the rewriting of Volume 1 of the new third edition. As in the previous edition, this volume includes three major sections: examination of the patient, esophageal disorders, and gastric disorders. The total number of volumes will be increased from three to four and, for easier handling, each will contain about 1000 pages.
