To the editor: The editorial "Federal Recognition of Chiropractic: A Double Standard" by H. Thomas Ballantine, Jr. (Ann Intern Med 82:712-713, 1975) is a useful narrative about recent policy decisions involving chiropractic and contains important suggestions for the medical profession and the federal government. I must take issue, however, with the final recommendation.
Dr. Ballantine would like to empower the Commissioner of the U. S. Department of Education with the ability "to pass on 'the legitimacy . . . of the field of training of the agency seeking listing' " as an accrediting body. He would give an appointed bureaucrat
