With controversy as its main character, this text attempts to deal with conflicting theories, practices, and prejudices in psychiatry. It is a major and significant undertaking. The controversy over the role and effectiveness of these two forms of treatment, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, has not only been hotly debated but reflects a more fundamental issue as to theories of etiology in psychiatry. This issue goes to basic concerns about psychological and biological factors and their respective roles in causation of these disorders.
This appraisal of these issues is critical and hence valuable. It reviews studies that have dealt with the activity
