It is hard to see the need for an eighth edition of a textbook concerned with physical diagnosis, a technique of medicine long since matured and generating almost no new methods for bedside examination and little new data in the past decade. Certainly the competent internist will have long since evolved his own approach at the office and in the hospital and will find reading of such a book peculiarly unrewarding. Second year medical students are really the target, so what does this revision of Major's Physical Diagnosis offer them? The facts of the discipline are there, although presented at
