During the past decade the field of calcium metabolism has been marked by rapid advances. These include important discoveries concerning the metabolism of vitamin D, a better understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of parathyroid hormone and calcitonin, and a more fundamental understanding of the nature of bone as a tissue. It is time for someone to write a new book to relate these findings to metabolic bone disease, and C. R. Paterson has done an admirable job with this difficult task.
