It is said that the great pathologist Virchow asked in the course of an oral examination of a student, "What is the function of the spleen?" The student thought deeply, pounded his forehead, and said, "I'm sorry, I knew it last night while I was studying, but it's gone now." To which Virchow replied, "What a pity—one of the great unknowns of medical science was solved last night and now it's lost again."
