This first of three volumes to be presented on studies of approximately 18 000 women within the Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program at Walnut Creek, California, describes patterns of contraceptive use, effects of steroid contraceptive drugs on a generally free-living population, and population-based laboratory and clinical data of value for reference purposes. It brings together published papers, elaborates on background data supporting these reports, presents some unpublished findings, and describes the study population as well as clinical and laboratory procedures. The observations include a battery of medical and psychologic questionnaires, selected examinations, and an encompassing laboratory profile. Examination is repeated annually
