On its face this books appears to be the most comprehensive and authoritative compendium of hepatology extant. All the usual topics are covered along with several new or rapidly changing fields such as bile acids and hepatobiliary disease, pharmacologic considerations in liver disease, and liver transplantation. Many of the 57 contributors are experts in their respective fields.
The authors appear to have been given considerable latitude in the quality and quantity of their contributions. Some chapters such as those on bile secretion, formation and treatment of gallstones, fatty liver, and viral hepatitis are written with clarity and economy. The chapter
