Education of patients and families about end-stage renal disease and its treatment is critical to successful management. Equally important is the development of positive attitudes toward treatment. From their personal experience the Oberleys have written a nontechnical account of artificial kidney treatment and the adjustments required. Technical terms are generally italicized and defined where they first appear. The language level is that of the average reader, approximately sixth-grade level.
The forewards contribute little but add the stamp of authority of medical experts. The first six chapters provide a simple, nontechnical explanation of kidney failure and the artificial kidney. Chapter seven
