To the editor: Clearly internal medicine is responding to and must continue to respond to the challenge of providing primary care. In doing so, however, internal medicine must be careful to address the problems facing it in an orderly manner and develop solutions that will serve it in both the near and distant future.
In the past, training programs in internal medicine have had some serious deficiencies, but they also have had much to recommend them. There is little question that training for primary care in internal medicine has been neglected. On the other hand, most training programs have provided,
