Considering the recent growth in our understanding of basic processes in myocardial contraction, this book, now in its second edition, is most timely, particularly because an understanding of these processes is of importance to clinicians, who may not be acquainted with the primary literature. The text attractively brings together data from basic and applied studies; the index is current and complete.
The first chapter, on basic mechanisms of cardiac muscle, is complete but generally relies too heavily on results of experiments and models rather than the evidence and reasoning that lead to its conclusions; it does not read as smoothly
