A self-study syllabus for medical students and other students of physiology that introduces the student to the clearance concept and demonstrates how its use may give quantitative evaluation of specific kidney function. Emphasis is on glomerular filtration rate. Average study time: 30 to 50 minutes.
Upon completion of study, the student will be able to define the term "clearance" and list the necessary data to be collected from a patient or animal to calculate clearance; to recall the mathematical equation to calculate clearance; to recall the characteristics of a substance whose clearance ideally measures the glomerular filtration rate; to calculate
