The decisions on what papers to publish in this journal are made by the editors, but most of these decisions do not rest solely on their judgments. All manuscripts sent to the editors are read by them; about one third are rejected after this reading, but two thirds are sent out to experts in basic and clinical disciplines that extend from anthropology to zoology. These consultant experts are free to recommend rejection or acceptance, but their advice is sought mainly on whether the papers they read for us reach scientifically valid conclusions and on the importance of these conclusions-importance in
