Gordan and Vaughn provide an up-to-date clinical review of a common problem in medical practice. In the first few chapters they deal with the definition of osteoporosis and with its relation to physical activity, aging, and hormone and endocrine function. Bone physiology and pathology is presented comprehensibly. Middle chapters carry a discussion of diagnostic tests and a rather lengthy review of quantitative measures of bone density. After discussing the main differential diagnosis of osteoporosis, the authors take up the major types of osteoporosis: postmenopausal osteoporosis, immobilization osteoporosis, and corticoid osteoporosis.
