Dr. Kaye assembled twelve collaborators, all experienced investigators or clinicians, to write this review of the present status of infective endocarditis. This resulting treatise is the first comprehensive summary of epidemiology, pathology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, prophylaxis, management and investigations of this disease since 1955 when Subacute Bacterial Endocarditis by Andrew Kerr was published. Major stimuli to the current authors are the quanta advances in understanding of pathogenesis and treatment as well as changes in clinical findings in the intervening years between Kerr's and Kaye's projects.
