Considering the paucity of textbooks of epidemiology and the eminence of Dr. Lilienfeld, his book is certainly worthy of attention. The preface suggests that this volume may be used for medical, dental, nursing, and allied health students, but this is at least an intermediate-level text rather than an elementary work. Thus, its depth and somewhat ponderous style limit its suitability for elementary or casual readers, including most clinicians. A shorter and simpler introduction with greater readability is Gary Friedman's Primer of Epidemiology (1974). Indeed, the Primer would be a good introduction to Lilienfeld's book.
