The past decade has witnessed a flowering of oncologic medicine. New, effective chemotherapeutic agents have been developed, and combination chemotherapy has proved its value. The advantages of the multidisciplinary approach to the management of the cancer patient have been recognized. Advances have been made in our understanding of the cause of the neoplastic process and the role of immunological factors in the genesis of tumors as well as in cancer diagnosis and therapy. Increased attention has also been given to the previously neglected areas of rehabilitation and psychosocial support.
