We invite the readers of this issue to join in a well-deserved tribute to the Annals of Internal Medicine in celebration of its golden anniversary. The history of this journal is described elsewhere in these pages; it includes the early, faltering steps taken by the College in trying to establish a journal. Several initial failures were followed, 50 years ago, by the birth of a permanent publication that has grown steadily to its present mature stature. The story of the evolution of the ANNALS rightly emphasizes both the vision and the adaptability of the able editors who insisted on the
