The last volume of Section 7 (Endocrinology) of the Handbook of Physiology is an appropriate conclusion to a distinguished series. Although entitled, "The Parathyroid Gland," this book is actually a comprehensive analysis of mineral metabolism. Its format focuses upon several general areas. Bone, the major organ of interest, is considered from the points of view of structure, development, and metabolic activities. Calcium is discussed with reference to the interchange between intraskeletal and extraskeletal calcium, absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, and, ultimately, its renal handling.
