To paraphrase the words of Policard, pneumoconiosis is a "conflict between the lung tissue and particulate matter." The particulate matter is represented by an increasing number of dusts of inorganic and organic origin. The lung tissue belongs not only to those exposed through an occupation or a hobby, but also to a growing fraction of the population at large affected by atmospheric pollution.
