Franz Ingelfinger, thank you for the decade of service you have given to medicine as Editor of The New England Journal of Medicine.
Long before you moved into Dr. Garland's chair, you had the phenotype, as your colleagues have put it (1), of the superb editor. Your fruitful career as an investigator in gastroenterology was proof of your talents in seeking and weighing scientific evidence. You could discern the particular flavor and worth of a piece of writing—a discernment that was evident in comments you wrote for Year Book of Medicine (2):
