Attempting to summarize the knowledge of respiratory distress syndrome is perhaps overly ambitious for a book of this brevity; however, the historical review of this syndrome and the literature review of present concepts of etiology are excellent. The pathological sequences of events in uncomplicated respiratory distress syndrome precipitated by trauma are most interesting. It is unfortunate that the photomicrographs of the lung pathology are not in color nor better described to illustrate the salient features.
