Attempts to select "common" abbreviations from the alphabet soup of medical terminology are often futile, as these two handbooks prove. Abbreviations in Medicine claims to list "common" abbreviations from German, English, and French. In many cases, however, only the German spelling for a term is given (G6PD, Glucose-6-Phosphatdehydrogenase), and the German convention of capitalizing all nouns makes it difficult to determine which terms are not capitalized in English, particularly where English and German spellings are similar. English terms and generic names are frequently unaccountably capitalized ("Charge Nurse," "Dopamine"). There is very little attempt to separate the frequently used from the
