Papers presented at the Bayer-Symposium VI held in May 1976 in Cologne. Discussions of searches for adequate experimental models for the study of chronic inflammatory diseases highlight four underlying phenomena: persistent viral infection, retention of enzyme-resistant bacterial residues, inappropriate activation of lymphocytes, and autoimmunity. Emphasis is on rheumatic diseases.
