The woman with serious underlying disease who becomes pregnant and the pregnant woman who develops a serious disease or complication of the pregnancy often present difficult management problems. Management is often further hampered by poor understanding of the pathophysiology of the disorder. Such is the case in the patient with renal disease or hypertension who becomes pregnant or the pregnant patient who develops hypertension or a renal complication related to the pregnant state.
