To the editor: After reading the article by Kaunitz and Lindenbaum, "The Bioavailability of Folic Acid Added to Wine" (Ann Intern Med 87:542-545 1977), I can understand the criticism of medical research from certain segments of our government a ad the public. I noted that this study was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.
The motive for doing such a study escapes me; perhaps it was the fun of performing the research. Preventing folic acid deficiency in wine-consuming alcoholics may thwart an unusual type of anemia in this unfortunate group; however, these persons need far more
