The physiologic principles of physical activity and the relation between habitual physical activity and age, ethnic group, occupation and leisure, climate and altitude, degree of industrialization, and health status are dealt with in Part I; various methods of quantifying habitual physical activity patterns in individuals and in population groups are described in Part II. Appendixes give calculation of energy values of food or food groups (Atwater system), average values of energy expenditure in specified activities, and examples of activity questionnaires.
