Choices need to be made in dealing with this fundamental yet complicated subject, as acknowledged by the authors. The whole range of immunogenetics is not covered; rather the concentration on immunoglobulin and human blood group antigen polymorphisms is presented in considerable detail. A fair background in biochemistry, genetics, immunology, or all of these areas, would be desirable for the nonspecialist reader.
The chapters are introduced in a leading and questioning way, to begin appropriate basic considerations. Data and detail are reported in the text and charts, and represent reference material as much as reading information. The sometimes tricky nomenclature involved
