The first chapter provides an introduction to human genetics; then cystic fibrosis and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, two diseases with "well-established genetic components," are examined. Other chapters are intended to "increase awareness among physicians concerning such matters as familial aggregation of lung diseases, the importance of searching for host-defense errors in chronic lung disease, and the role of immunologic mechanisms in allergic states, including bronchial asthma." For students and practitioners involved in pulmonary diseases, as well as chest physicians, physiologists, geneticists, and biologists.
